Details
Michael Carroll is celebrating his 31st year with the American Red Cross having begun his career in 1979 as an emergency services coordinator supporting military families and disaster victims at the Annapolis Branch of the Baltimore Regional Chapter in Maryland. In 1983, he joined the eastern area office of our national headquarters as Chief of Disaster Damage Assessment and, in 1985, was promoted to Assistant Director for Disaster Operations; responsible for supporting all major disasters in the Eastern US. He was appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Greater Miami (FL) Chapter in 1987 and subsequently led the local response to 1992’s Hurricane Andrew – among the worst disasters in U.S. history. In 1995, Michael and his family moved to Columbus where he took the helm as CEO of the ARC of Greater Columbus covering Fayette, Franklin, Madison, and Pickaway counties. His responsibilities were expanded in 1997 when he became Regional CEO for fifteen Central-Southeast Ohio chapters. Over the past three decades, Michael has served in field leadership roles on more than 20 major disaster operations, including Director of Hurricane Katrina relief for Texas, Arkansas and Oklahoma in 2005. He represented the chapter network on the Search Committee which engaged current President/CEO Gail McGovern and currently supports her and other senior national staff on several task forces. Michael is a native of Rutland, Vermont and graduated a long, long time ago from the home of the fighting Catamounts – the University of Vermont. When he isn’t working, Michael spends time with his wife Glenda and son Brennan who is a senior in the Worthington School district. He plays golf with intermittent success, reads trashy detective stories, and loves to travel to almost anyplace that he hasn’t been before. His spiritual center is atop Mount Mansfield - Vermont’s highest point and the most amazing thing he’s ever seen is the “General Sherman” giant sequoia – the largest tree in the world.
